What Is the Kingdom of God and How Do We Live in It?(TheKingdom Way)

 The Kingdom Way Series

“But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
—Matthew 6:33 (ESV)

“The Kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”
—Romans 14:17 (NIV)

When Jesus walked the earth, He didn’t just come to die for our sins He came to announce a Kingdom. He preached about it. He taught in parables to explain it. He demonstrated its power. And He called people into it.

But what exactly is the Kingdom of God?

Is it a place we go when we die? Is it just a spiritual metaphor? Or is it something we’re meant to experience and embody right here, right now?

Let’s explore what Scripture reveals about the Kingdom of God, and how we are called to live in it, advance it, and reflect it every day.

1. The Kingdom of God Defined

The Kingdom of God is not primarily a physical realm it is the reign and rule of God. It exists wherever God’s will is done, His authority is honored, and His nature is reflected.

Jesus declared:

“The Kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” —Mark 1:15 (ESV)

He wasn’t talking about a future event. He was announcing the arrival of a new order God’s rule breaking into the world through Him.

And while the fullness of God’s Kingdom will be revealed when Jesus returns, it is already here in part. Wherever lives are surrendered, hearts are transformed, and Jesus is Lord there is the Kingdom.

2. Living in the Kingdom Starts with a New Heart

The Kingdom is not entered by birthright, merit, or status it’s received by faith and surrender.

Jesus said:

“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” —John 3:3 (NIV)

Kingdom living begins with new birth a spiritual transformation. It’s not about adding Jesus to our lives. It’s about giving Him complete authority.

Living in the Kingdom means:

  • Jesus is not just Savior, He is Lord.

  • We don’t follow culture, we follow Christ.

  • Our lives are not our own, we belong to the King.

3. Kingdom Living Is Radical Living

When Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), He flipped the world’s values upside down:

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven…

  • Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…

  • Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness…

The Kingdom way is not comfortable but it is powerful.

It calls us to:

  • Forgive when we want revenge.

  • Give when we feel lack.

  • Serve when we crave recognition.

  • Trust when we don’t understand.

The Kingdom of God reorders our priorities, realigns our desires, and rewires how we see everything.

4. Kingdom People Live with a Mission

We are not saved to be spectators we are citizens of the Kingdom and ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Jesus taught us to pray:

“Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” —Matthew 6:10 (NIV)

We are the vessels through which that prayer is answered. Every act of love, every word of truth, every step of obedience ushers God’s Kingdom into the world.

In your workplace, your school, your neighborhood you carry the Kingdom.

When you encourage someone, you plant Kingdom seeds.
When you live with integrity, you reveal the King.
When you share the gospel, you extend His reign.

5. Living the Kingdom Way Means Living with Eternal Perspective

In the Kingdom, we are called to live with eternity in view.

Jesus said:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” —Matthew 6:19–20 (NIV)

This world is not our home. We are pilgrims and ambassadors, not settlers. The Kingdom teaches us to live now in light of what is eternal.

  • We give generously because our treasure is in heaven.

  • We suffer patiently because we know glory is coming.

  • We resist sin because our reward is far greater.

Kingdom living is not about gaining more it’s about becoming more like the King.

6. The Kingdom Is Power, Not Just Words

Paul wrote:

“For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.” —1 Corinthians 4:20 (NIV)

Kingdom people don’t just talk about faith they live it boldly. They pray with authority, love without limits, and move in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Where the Kingdom is, there is:

  • Healing for the broken.

  • Deliverance from bondage.

  • Peace that passes understanding.

  • Joy that cannot be stolen.

If our faith is only intellectual and not transformational, we’re not walking fully in the Kingdom Jesus died to give us.

Final Thoughts: Living the Kingdom Way

Living in the Kingdom of God is not reserved for “super-Christians.” It is the normal Christian life.

It’s a life of radical love, humble service, joyful obedience, and relentless hope. It’s living in step with the Spirit, shaped by the Word, and driven by eternity.

So, are you living in the Kingdom or just visiting it on Sundays?

The invitation is open. The King is calling. His Kingdom is at hand.

Let us not settle for anything less.
