The Importance of Daily Devotion & Time with God(Drawing Closer to God)

Drawing Closer to God Series

In our fast-paced, always-online world, it’s easy to let the most important relationship in our lives fall to the background. But a thriving walk with God doesn’t happen by accident it’s cultivated intentionally, day by day.

Spending daily time with God through devotion isn’t about checking off a religious box. It’s about pursuing a relationship with the One who created you, saved you, and longs to walk with you through every moment of life.

Jesus said in John 15:4:

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.”

That word remain speaks of consistency, connection, and closeness. And daily devotion is one of the most powerful ways we “remain” in Him.

Why Daily Devotion Matters

  1. It Deepens Your Relationship with God
Just like with any meaningful relationship, closeness with God is built over time. Daily time in Scripture and prayer creates space for you to know Him more deeply not just know about Him, but truly experience Him.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” – James 4:8

The more you spend time with Him, the more you’ll hear His voice, sense His presence, and understand His heart.

  1. It Grounds You in Truth
In a world filled with lies, distractions, and shifting values, we desperately need truth. The Word of God is that truth. Daily devotion allows you to renew your mind, realign your heart, and anchor yourself in what never changes.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105

  1. It Strengthens You for Life’s Battles
Life can be overwhelming. But spending time with God arms you with strength, wisdom, and peace for the day ahead.

Before Jesus faced the cross, He withdrew to pray. Before David went into battle, he sought the Lord. Before Moses led Israel, he met with God face to face. You don’t fight today’s battles in your own strength when you’ve spent time with the One who holds all power.

What Daily Devotion Can Look Like

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to spending time with God. The goal isn’t perfection it’s presence. Here are a few simple ways to build a consistent rhythm:

  • Start with Scripture: Even a few verses can speak volumes. Try beginning in the Psalms, Proverbs, or the Gospels.

  • Talk to God honestly: Prayer isn’t a performance. It’s a conversation. Tell Him what’s on your heart, and take time to listen.

  • Use a devotional guide: A Christ-centered devotional can help guide your thoughts and focus.

  • Reflect and journal: Writing down what God is teaching you helps internalize truth and creates a record of your spiritual growth.

  • Worship through music: A song of praise can change your whole perspective.

Whether it’s 10 minutes in the morning or an hour at night, what matters most is that you show up.

Overcoming Common Challenges

  • “I don’t have time.”
Start small. Wake up 10 minutes earlier or use your lunch break. If Jesus made time to pray in the middle of His busy ministry, we can too (Mark 1:35).

  • “I don’t know what to say.”
You don’t need fancy words. Just be real. God wants you, not your polished version.

  • “I miss a day and feel guilty.”
Don’t let guilt keep you from grace. Just come back. God isn’t counting the days you missed He’s looking forward to time with you today.

Real Growth Happens Daily

Faith isn’t built in grand moments it’s built in the small, quiet ones that often go unnoticed. A strong, unshakable relationship with God is the fruit of steady, intentional pursuit. When you make space for God in your everyday life, you’ll begin to see Him in every area of your life.

Let this be the year you make daily time with God a non-negotiable. Not because you have to, but because you get to. Because He is worthy. Because you are loved. And because the closer you draw to Him, the more you’ll discover the life you were made for.
